By Mark Davison – One of the original founders of the South African IT channel and one of its most respected and revered executives, David Kan, CEO of JSE-listed Mustek, has died.

Kan founded Mustek in 1987, a company that has grown to a listed entity comprising Mustek and Rectron, with R6,397-billion in revenue and assets totalling R3,627-billion.

As well as being a distributor for many international brands, Mustek was one of the first companies to set up manufacturing facilities in South Africa for the locally-made Mecer PCs and laptops.

At the time of going to press, no details had been released on the circumstances of Kan’s passing, but the company has issued a brief statement announcing the devastating news.

“It is with profound sadness that Mustek announces that David Kan, our much-loved and respected CEO, has passed away,” the company stated. “We extend our most heartfelt condolences and sympathy to David’s family. Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time.

“He leaves behind a proud legacy of strong and principled leadership, and he will be sorely missed by his fellow directors, the management and all employees at Mustek.

“The Board extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to David’s family and to everyone at Mustek whose lives he touched so deeply.

“The Board will convene in due course to discuss changes to the Board and its committees, which changes will be communicated.”
